A landmark in the heart of downtown Akron, St. Thomas Hospital was built by the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine in 1928. Since opening the first alcoholism treatment unit in the U.S. in 1939, it has remained a leader in substance abuse services. Named a 5 Star Hospital in nursing and surgical services in a 2005 PRC physician satisfaction survey, St. Thomas has been a Summa System sister institution to Akron City Hospital since 1989.
