Welcome to the Youngstown Region

Twenty-first Century Energy

Snapshot

A home to industry and art, affordable living and miles of parklands, Mahoning County sits at the Ohio-Pennsylvania border in the Mahoning (Salt Lick) River Valley. Youngstown is the urban hub and county seat, an hour away from both Cleveland and Pittsburgh. Responding industrial change, leaders are progressively ‘right-sizing’ the city, engaging with experts from Youngstown State University to develop the superior quality of life a smaller city affords, including building on a devotion to the arts that goes from the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra to many performing and visual arts venues.

Boardman, just south of Youngstown, grew up in the 19th century around grain and apple cultivation. Now it is a both a regional retail center and a welcoming residential city adjoining the beautiful Mill Creek Park.

The unique town of Salem, founded by Quakers in 1806 and site of Ohio’s first women’s rights convention, still has historic homes with hidden rooms and secret passages once connected to the Underground Railroad. Unique shops, restaurants and galleries preserve the 19th century character of downtown Salem.
